Its ancestry goes back to the Medieval horses brought to England by William the Conquerer. It has long hair on the back of its hind legs from its hocks down to the hooves called feathers. The Shire may be black, bay, brown, chestnut or gray. The legs have stockings or socks except on the grays. Shires are used all around the world. They are seen working on farms, or in competition as pulling horses. Shires are also crossed with Thouroughbreds to produce Hunter type horses for competion in jumping events.
